About Our Work Q.What is Food Bank Kansai? A. Founded in 2003, Food Bank Kansai is the only food bank serving the Kansai area in Japan, servicing Osaka and Kobe with plans to serve the rest of Kansai (Kyoto, Himeji, etc) in the future. We solicit, collect, and distribute food from manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers and distribute it to nonprofit community food programs. How does the Food Bank help NPO's in Kansai? A.The Food Bank provides food to one nonprofit community programs in Kobe and Osaka by providing them with food that has been donated by food manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers. These agencies - including soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, low-income day care centers. <back to top> Q. How does the Food Bank get food? A. Food Bank Kansai's goal is to follow the food bank model that has been successfully applied in the United States. This means receiving donations from national and local food manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, brokers and food distributors. These products, including packaged, canned, perishable and non-perishable foods, meet all food safety and nutrition standards. How is the food distributed? A. In the first phase of our development, Phase I (see How We Work for details of our development plan), FBK volunteers will pick up food from 1of our two food donors (currently one donor- Costco Wholesale in Amagasaki) 6 days each week for immediate delivery to one of our recipient agencies . In Phases II and III of our development plan FBK will break down and repackage the donated food in a staging warehouse into sizes and food types suitable for each community food programs we serve. In our first year of operation, Food Bank Kansai plans to deliver approximately _ ton of food per week for a total of 27 tons. We expect our volume and ability to assist non profit organizations to increase as we move into Phase II of our development plan (How we Work for details). The Food Bank provides food to Kansai's soup kitchens, shelters, and senior, youth and rehabilitation centers. Our network consists approximately 15 community food programs. This population includes children, the elderly, the homeless and low-income workers. More than half of the people served in these programs are children and the elderly. <back to top> Q. Can the hungry get food directly from the Food Bank? A. No. The food is collected and distributed to qualified NPO's that feed the individuals they serve. These NPO's, called member nonprofit community food programs or agencies, receive food from the Food Bank. <back to top> Q. Does the Food Bank sell food? A. The Food Bank does not and cannot sell food. Moreover our network of community food programs are prohibited from selling food intended for those they serve. Food items, including all produce and bread, are provided to member agencies free-of-charge. <back to top> Q. Are food safety and nutrition issues for the Food Bank? A. Food safety and nutrition are Food Bank Kansai's top priority. Our volunteers are trained to understand the nutritional needs of our member agencies and to carefully monitor food donations for quality and freshness. Is FOOD WASTE a serious problem in the Kansai? A. Food waste is a bi-product of a modern food manufacturing economy. While large scale food manufacturing facilities are very efficient, there is an inevitable amount of food surplus due to the limitations in forecasting accuracy. These production over runs make up the bulk of Food Bank Kansai's food donations. <back to top> ABOUT HELPING Q. How much of my donation goes to provide food assistance to NPO's? A. Every 100 yen provided to Food Bank Kansai allows the food bank to donate 700 yen of food. <back to top> Q. Is the Food Bank a Non Profit Organization? A. Food Bank Kansai has applied for official NPO status by the Hyogo prefecture. Formal NPO status is expected in early 2004. <back to top> Q. Why should I support Food Bank Kansai? A. It is incomprehensible to allow quality, nutritious food to be destroyed when NPOs dedicated to serving children, women and the elderly could benefit from this food. By giving to Food Bank Kansai, you are showing your respect for our most basic natural resource, food and the individuals that could benefit from them. <back to top> Q. Does the Food Bank accept food donations from individuals? A. When Food Bank Kansai establishes a warehouse in Phase II of our development plan, individuals will be welcome to donate canned foods only. We will not accept prepared foods or perishables from individuals. The most beneficial way for an individual to donate food to the Food Bank is through food drives.
